World Environment Day is a day that promotes environmental awareness and encourages everyone to take action whether that is part of a community or as an individual. There are so many things that you can do to make an impact on your local environment and create sustainable habits that can change your lifestyle.
Energy conservation
One of the first things that might come to mind is to reduce your energy consumption to lessen your carbon footprint which can be achieved in many different ways. This can include turning off lights and appliances when not in use, upgrading to more energy-efficient appliances, insulating your home, and installing solar panels so that you can produce your own electricity from a renewable energy source. Solar panels are one of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint, ensure you are getting energy from renewable sources and reduce your energy bills. You can learn more about this in our blog about Generating Your Own Energy.
Water conservation
As well as conserving energy you could also conserve water to lessen the impact that your water consumption has on the environment. This can include turning the water off when brushing your teeth, reducing the length of your showers, showering instead of baths, upgrading to more water efficient appliances, ensuring you don’t have any leaks, and installing a water butt to recycle rainwater for your garden.
Waste reduction and recycling
Reducing the amount of materials and resources you use and send to landfill is another great way to lessen your environmental impact. This can include reducing the amount of single-use plastics you use so be careful about the products you buy, purchasing sustainable or eco-friendly products, and recycling any packaging. You can also plan your meals to reduce food waste and compost suitable waste.
Garden space
You could utilise your garden to create a nature-friendly space by planting flowers that support bees and local wildlife. If you have the space you could plant a tree or create a vegetable patch (or even a herb window box) so that you can grow your own vegetables.
Community impacts
You could join in with community activities to improve your local environment such as community clean-up events to create better green spaces and clean up litter. This could include helping to re-wild spaces by planting wildflowers and trees to create spaces to support insects and wildlife.
Supporting environmental organisations
There are also non-profit environmental organisations that you can support either by volunteering or donating to them. You could also support them by sharing their messages online and promoting their campaigns.
Enjoying nature
Even taking time to enjoy nature and getting outside is a way of appreciating your environment and respecting what is available to you rather than spending time on other activities which could use electricity.
Whatever you do this World Environment Day, we hope you have fun and make an impact your way.
