We have all probably been making the most of the gloriously sunny weather the UK has been basking in. And with reports of a two week long heat wave, it looks like we will be continuing to enjoy it.
But do you know who has been really enjoying this beautiful weather? Those households and businesses with solar panels on their roofs. As a solar panel owner, there is great pleasure in watching the generation meter go up (unlike the electricity meter counterparts!), as it signals the financial savings you are making.
Solar panels are one of the easiest ways to reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills. You can even earn money from selling any unused electricity back to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Alternatively, you can store your electricity during the day in a battery so that you can use it when you need it most.
How much could you save by installing solar panels?
The amount you can save will vary depending on a few factors including the size of the solar PV system you have installed, the amount of electricity you use, how much you export, and whether you have battery storage.
A typical three-bedroom house, for example, in South-East England with a 12-panel solar PV system with battery storage could save you over £1,000 a year. This is based on the first year’s savings, and you should expect the savings to grow each year based on inflation and rising energy costs. We have calculated based on basic inflation increases alone (as no one can predict energy price increases over 30 years), that the solar PV system in this example could save over £57,500 over its 30-year lifespan after deducting installation costs and factoring in replacement parts over the 30 years. Now that’s a lot of savings, even without the energy bill increases factored in.

Does the sun have to be shining to generate electricity?
Even though we are saying solar panel owners are reaping the benefits of the gloriously sunny weather, that doesn’t mean that the solar panels won’t work on days that aren’t so sunny. Solar panels work on daylight, and although the intensity of the daylight does increase the yield, it doesn’t prevent them from working on less sunny days. As long as there is daylight reaching the solar panels, they will generate electricity. Clouds and shading on the panels will affect their yield, but even in winter you can expect to generate electricity.
