Solar Seasons – is There a Perfect Time to Install?

With the famously unpredictable (or perhaps reliably unreliable) UK weather, it’s natural to wonder: Is solar really worth it here? And when’s the best time to install?

The short answer is yes and the best time to install is now. Without solar, you are missing out on savings, so every day you delay is a day you are losing money.

Let’s break it down by season:

Spring – the Smart Starter

As the days start getting longer and the weather starts improving, spring is the most popular time for solar installs. The longer days mean an increase in sunlight which your solar panels require to generate electricity. Temperatures are mild, which — contrary to popular belief — optimise the efficiency of your solar panels. Studies suggest April and May may offer peak efficiency for solar panels, with their bright daylight, cooler temperatures and occasional rain (perfect for cleaning off dust from your solar panels).

Summer – Peak Performance

Summer is when your system truly shines, with maximum sunlight hours during the longest days. Many people decide to install solar in the summer months for instant savings. Summer months see you offset more of your energy bills and even receive payment for exports back to the grid. Installing in the summer can see your install be delayed, at SolarTherm UK we can experience delays in getting your DNO approval through due to the volume of applications being made – this can delay your install date (if you are having a larger system installed) or delay you being able to benefit from SEG payments (if your system is below 4kW).

Autumn – Quiet Efficiency

Autumn may seem like an odd time to have your solar installed, but it is still beneficial. The cool, crisp mornings are perfect for solar efficiency. Your panels will still generate power in the autumn. Autumn is also the perfect time to install quickly as installers are usually quieter this time of year and have more availability. We also find DNO approval comes back quicker in the autumn months.

Winter – Time to Plan for the Future

Your panels will still generate electricity on a cold, cloudy winter day – just at a lower levels than other times of the year. The shorter days mean there’s less sunlight to capture so output is reduced. Snow will rarely cause an issue as your panels are installed at an angle, encouraging the snow to slide off and cleaning the surface in the process. By installing during the winter months, you will have time to work out how your system works best for you ready for the peak spring and summer months.

So…When is the Best Time to Install Solar?

Solar is a year-round investment, you benefit from it throughout the seasons, even when its cold or cloudy. The earlier you install, the earlier you see the benefits. With energy prices set to increase again in the autumn there is no better time than today to start your solar journey.
