Solar Panel Mounting Systems

At SolarTherm UK, we understand that every project is unique. Choosing the right solar panel system and matching it to the correct mounting kit is crucial for maximising performance, durability and aesthetics. No matter what style roof your property has, whether it be pitched, flat or you are having a ground mounted system installed, there’s a mounting solution that matches your needs.

This guide will explore the different types of solar panel mounting systems to help you find the perfect fit for your solar project.

Solar Panels for Pitched Roofs

On Roof Solar Panels

The most common mounting system is an on roof installation, where your solar panels are mounted directly onto the roof structure. This is a cost effective option that provides excellent ventilation for your panels, ensuring optimal performance.

Metal hooks are attached directly to the roof rafters, sometimes requiring the temporary removal of roof tiles. Rails are then fitted across the hooks and the panels are clamped securely into place. A weatherproof seal is then applied to ensure your roof remains watertight and secure.

If you have a slate roof, additional flashing will be fitted to safeguard the waterproof protection of your roof.

In Roof Solar Panels

The most common in roof system is the GSE mounting system. At SolarTherm UK we use this for our customers looking for an in roof (or integrated) system that give a seamless, aesthetically pleasing finish without compromising on performance and reliability. GSE in roof systems are lightweight, watertight and affordable and fit around 90% of solar PV panels on the UK market.

Your solar panels sit in a tray that is attached to the existing roof structure, replacing the roof tiles. Once the panels are fitted, the remainder of the roof is then tiled, creating a seamless look.

While in roof solar panels are more aesthetically pleasing, it is worth noting that they can reduce efficiency by 5-10% due to less air circulation.

On Roof Solar Panels for Metal Roofs

Many commercial buildings have metal trapezoidal roofs, making this system ideal for business solar installations. Panels are mounted close to the roof using self-tapping screws and rubber backed clamps, providing a waterproof seal and reducing wind impact. This is one of the most cost effective and fastest methods to install solar on a commercial property.

Solar Tiles

Solar tiles replace traditional roof tiles entirely, seamlessly integrating solar technology with your home’s design. While visually striking, their efficiency is currently lower than traditional on roof or integrated systems. Solar tiles are still a relatively new technology on the solar market, meaning there is limited options available in the UK, making them expensive and difficult to source.

Flat Roof Solar Panel Systems

There are two main types of flat roof mounting systems. Renusol console bins are low-cost, durable and easy to install, made from recyclable materials, they provide cooling airflow and are angles at 15°, held in place with weight, such as soil, sand, brick or gravel.

At SolarTherm UK we use a ballast weighted frame. Securing your mounting system to your flat roof, using preassembled frames on aluminium feet. This system allows for optimum placement of your solar panels, preventing shading and installed at the perfect angle and orientation. Once in place, the ballast is then placed on the frame underneath the panels and the panels are directly bolted onto the frame.

Ground Mounted Solar Panel Systems

If your roof isn’t suitable or you have available land, ground mounted solar panels can be the perfect solution. A ground mounted system allows for maximum generation and easier maintenance and are ideal for larger or off grid installations. Like flat roofs, there are two main types of installation: renusol console bins or metal frame mounts.

Renusol console bins work the same way for ground mounted solar panels as they do with flat roof installations. For larger commercial projects, panels can be mounted on metal frames fixed into the ground.
