Grid games: why being a solar trendsetter beats following the crowd

When it comes to solar, getting in early isn’t just smart, it’s strategic. While many homeowners and businesses wait until “everyone’s doing it,” those who act now are securing key advantages, from grid capacity to long-term savings.

So, what’s the game? And why does being first matter so much?

The grid: a finite resource with first come, first served access

The National Grid was built in 1935, and although it has had numerous upgrades to infrastructure and cabling since, it still isn’t capable of unlimited capacity and export from microgeneration systems. Every time a solar PV system is installed approval is required from the local DNO (Distribution Network Operator) if the system is over 3.68kW.

Your DNO will assess your system on worst case scenario – so what is the most the system can possibly export to the grid. For example, if you had a 5kW solar inverter and a 10kW battery both exporting at full capacity, your DNO would assess whether the grid could handle 15kW being exported at one time.

The earlier you apply, the more chance you have of having a higher capacity approved, whereas if you was the 6th or 7th property on your network to apply you are more likely to be restricted on capacity or have export limits applied.

The latecomer’s dilemma

Waiting too long to have solar installed could mean having grid limitations put on your system, your DNO may limit your capacity or export if the grid capacity is full. If your system is 3.68kW or below you do not have to seek permission prior to install, notification is given to the DNO on completion of the install. You may also have to pay for expensive installs or settle for a battery-only system costing more than a standard install. Also, as solar becomes more popular in your area you could be met with delays in approval due to higher interest and applications in the area.
