Homeowners are increasingly looking to make home improvements that can aid them in reducing their household bills and save them money. A Smart Energy GB survey has shown that 49% of homeowners are making energy efficient home improvements. Their motivations behind these home improvements have been 38% for energy efficiency, 18% for improved functionality and 15% for modernisation.
The survey also discovered that 58% of households made the improvements to make bill savings and that 64% made them as they could boost the value of the property. As a result of making energy efficiency upgrades to their homes, 95% of those had noticed savings on their bills with an average annual saving of £300.
What energy efficiency measures could you install in your home?
There are a range of energy efficiency measures that you could install from simple and lower cost measures to more expensive and greater yielding measures. These include switching your lighting to more energy efficient LED lighting which in the survey 21% of respondents had done. You can insulate your walls and loft if they haven’t been done already.
One of the biggest uses of energy in your home is your heating, so it is worth looking at the efficiency of your boiler and considering whether it is worth upgrading to a more energy efficient model – which 18% of survey respondents did. There are also other heating options that you could explore that can be more environmentally friendly and more energy efficient, such as an air source heat pump which there are currently generous grants available to support you with.
Alternatively, you could generate your own electricity by installing solar panels on your roof which 17% of the survey respondents did. Through installing solar panels you can not only save money on your energy bills but also make a small income from them as you can sell your excess electricity to the grid. Solar panels are a great way to save you money on your energy bills and could help you to save over £1,000 per year! You can read more about how this stacks up in one of our blogs.
Will energy efficiency measures increase the value of your home?
The property website Rightmove has undertaken research that shows that 77% of homeowners are willing to pay more for a home that is more energy efficient. They use EPC ratings to demonstrate the energy efficiency of a home and the difference between an E-rated home compared to a B-rated home could be over £2,200 per year on energy bills.
The survey by Smart Energy GB also supports this as 69% of respondents said that they would be looking for their next property to have energy efficiency upgrades. This shows that undertaking energy efficiency improvements could also increase the saleability of your home and could increase its value.
