Spring into action and get solar for your home

The sunshine seems to have finally arrived! Spring is in full swing, the flowers are blooming and our days are getting warmer and happier just in time for the school holidays and long Easter weekend. Is your attention turning to the garden and the outside of your home to get it ready for summer and spending more time outdoors?

Whilst you are spring cleaning your garden and home why not think about ways that you could get more from your home and maximise your home’s potential?

The ideal time to look at installing solar panels

Spring is a great time to think about installing solar, as you could install solar panels before the summer when you would get a maximum amount of electricity generated from them and feel the benefit straight away.

As the clocks have changed and the days get longer you are probably starting to benefit yourself from the longer daylight hours but how about benefiting from free electricity from that daylight too? Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not the sun’s rays so you don’t necessarily need bright sunlight to generate electricity, but the amount of daylight does impact the amount you can generate. So installing them now is a great time to start generating electricity.

Why is now a good time to invest in solar panels?

There couldn’t be a better time to invest in solar panels as we have just seen yet another energy price hike at the beginning of April, meaning we are paying even more for our electricity than almost ever before. In April 2025 the energy price cap rose to £1,849 which is a huge 70% rise in the last four years alone.

The markets are looking increasingly uncertain with world politics causing stock markets to become volatile so who knows where energy prices will be in a few years, but whatever happens they are unlikely to go down. So having energy independence by generating a good proportion of your own electricity is a great way to have some stability to your outgoings.

The average home with solar panels purchases around 44% of the electricity they use which means they generate over half of their electricity through their solar panels and this is protected from energy price rises and is free.

How much could solar panels save me on my energy bills?

The savings will be dependent on the size of your solar PV system and whether you have battery storage. As an example, if we look at an average three-bedroomed house in South-East England that has a 12-panel solar PV system with battery storage it can save over £1,000 a year.

These savings are based on the first year and do not include inflation and energy price rises so the savings will grow year on year. As an indication, we calculate the lifetime savings based on 30 years (the solar panels we use have 30-40 year warranties) with basic inflation factored in, as well as the initial installation cost and replacement parts over the 30 years. On a solar PV system of this size, we estimate a saving of over £57,500 over 30 years!

This really is food for thought and makes the sunshine look all the more appealing, doesn’t it?
