Solar energy is rapidly transforming the way the UK powers homes. Over 1.5 million homeowners across the UK now have solar panels and government data shows solar installations have increased by over 10% annually for the last three years.
There’s still more to be done, to ensure every households can benefit from free electricity by generating their own power with solar panels. To address this the UK Government launched its Solar Roadmap in late June 2025, laying out their plans to deliver 47 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy by 2030 as part of the Clean Power Plan.
While many of the actions detailed in the plan focus on infrastructure and industry, here are six key initiatives that are relevant for UK homeowners and renters.
Solar Panels on New Build Homes as Standard
Solar panels are becoming a standard feature in new homes. Under the Future Homes Standard, coming into effect in 2027, most new build properties will be required to include solar panels. The standard also ensures homes have low carbon heating solutions like heat pumps and proper insulation, making them energy-efficient from day one.
Plug in Solar Panels for Flats
Many people believe solar panels are not an option if they live in the flat. Currently, UK regulations do not allow plug-in solar panels, which attach to balconies and feed direct into the home’s mains. However, the Solar Roadmap proposes a safety review for plug-in solar panels, potentially opening the door for those owning or renting flats to benefit from solar power.
Affordable Financing Options for Solar Panels
Cost remains a major barrier for many homeowners across the UK to install solar panels. The average installation is between £6,000 and £7,500 with costs increasing with additional technology, like solar batteries.
While there’s currently no government scheme directly covering solar panel costs, the UK government plans to collaborate with financial institutions to offer low-cost loans and leasing options for solar installations.
Improved Property Valuations for Homes with Solar
Homes with solar panels are more energy efficient, which can increase their market value by up to 14%. The Government plans to work with the Royal Chartered Institute of Surveyors (RICS) to update property valuation methods, factoring in energy efficiency, renewable technology and EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) ratings.
EPC Reports to Reflect Solar Potential
Currently, EPCs list solar panels as an energy saving recommendation, the government is consulting on EPC reforms that could introduce a Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI). This score will highlight a home’s renewable energy potential, including solar power, helping homeowners understand the true value of their solar installations.
Community Benefits from Solar Farms
The Solar Roadmap also promotes community energy initiatives, allowing nearby residents to benefit from locally generated power from solar farms. Alongside this, a mandatory community benefit fund is being considered for low-carbon energy projects in the area.
