Solar Energy: Powering the UK’s Future

As the global energy landscape evolves, solar power continues to stand out as one of the most effective and affordable solutions for achieving a cleaner and more secure energy future.

Speaking at the Solar & Storage Live event in Birmingham in September 2025, industry leaders highlighted how the rapid growth of renewable energy technology, particularly solar and battery storage, is changing the energy system faster than anticipated even a few years ago.

“The electrification of homes, businesses, and transport — powered primarily by solar and wind, with support from advanced battery systems — is proving to be the most efficient and resilient way to meet our energy needs,” one expert noted at the conference.

The International Energy Agency, estimate more than $450 billion will be invested in solar energy this year, around the world, exceeding the estimated investment in coal, gas, nuclear and hydropower combined.

In the UK, solar capacity has surpassed 22 gigawatts, including over 1.6 million residential installations. The current government aims to have 57GW of solar power installed by 2030, helping households and businesses across the UK cut costs and support economic growth. External reviews by the Climate Change Committee has estimated that between 135,000 and 725,000 new jobs could be created by the low carbon energy sector by 2030.

Industry leaders have cautioned the speed of the transformation presents challenges, existing systems, regulations and grid infrastructure must evolve to keep up with technology developments and public demand.

Public Opinion and Party Conferences

Public sentiment towards renewable energy remains overwhelmingly positive, despite recent discussion around green energy policy by both the Conservative Party and Reform UK at their party conferences this year.

At their party conference in Manchester, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said it was impossible for the UK to meet its Net Zero goals by 2050 – a target set by the previous Conservative government under Theresa May. While not formally announcing any departure from the target, the party have signalled an intention to review the pace and scale of the transitions, with emphasis on affordable power and energy security for households and businesses.

Meanwhile, Reform UK has taken a different stance, proposing policies to increase domestic energy production through traditional means, including support for fracking and the potential reopening of coal mines. The party has also expressed skepticism about certain renewable energy subsidies and has suggested reviewing Contract for Difference (CfD) agreements, which currently underpin investment in solar and wind projects.

Despite differing political approaches, polling consistently shows that a strong majority of the British public continues to support investment in renewable energy. UK residents are increasingly seeing clean energy as the solution to rising energy costs, a reliable energy future and local job creation.
