When investing in renewable energy – whether it’s solar panels, heat pumps or home insulation – you’re not just buying a product – you’re investing in your future. At SolarTherm UK we’re proud to be accredited by HIES – the Home Insulation and Energy Systems Quality Assured Contractors Scheme.
Here’s why HIES is a name you should know before beginning your solar journey.
What is HIES?
HIES is a consumer protection scheme endorsed by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute – designed to protect homeowners when buying renewable energy and home improvement products. From pre-sale to installation and aftercare, HIES ensures you are treated fairly, transparently and ethically.
Why was HIES created?
With the rapid growth of the renewable energy industry mis-selling, poor workmanship and a lack of consumer clarity became obvious. HIES was established to create a framework that ensured consumers are give clear, accurate information, are protected financially and have a formal complaints and dispute resolution process. HIES makes buying renewable energy safe, simple and trustworthy.
How does HIES protect you?
Consumer advice line – HIES offers a free advice line for consumers to help you understand your rights and make informed decisions – before you sign your contract.
Vetted installers only – HIES conducts a full audit of it’s members for technical competence, financial stability and customer satisfaction. SolarTherm UK has passed all assessments – and continues to do so year on year – to be a member of HIES.
Deposit and stage payment protection – while the majority of our installations don’t require a deposit, those that do are fully protected up to 25% of the contract value or £5,000 by HIES for 120 days.
Insurance backed guarantees – HIES offers an insurance backed guarantee which protects your guarantee even if we were to cease trading. On completion of installation, we register your solar PV system and HIES will provide an insurance backed guarantee certificate. To benefit from this your installation must be fully completed and payment has been made in full.
Free dispute resolution – in the case something goes wrong and a resolution can not be found, HIES provide free mediation and access to a consumer ombudsman if required.
Why HIES matters when choosing an installer
Investing in solar panels or other renewable energy is a significant initial outlay. You need to ensure you are choosing a company that puts your needs and protection first. Choosing a HIES accredited installer means you won’t be subject to hard-sell techniques, your quote and performance estimates will be fair and accurate and you’ll have somewhere to go if something doesn’t go to plan.
At SolarTherm UK we don’t just talk about doing what’s right for our customers, we’re backed by schemes like HIES, EPVS and MCS which can give you total confidence in our work.
