Investing in a solar PV system is a significant step toward a more sustainable and cost-effective future—so it makes sense to ensure you’re getting the most value possible from your investment.
At SolarTherm UK, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Every system we install is custom-designed to suit your property and energy usage, ensuring maximum efficiency and long-term savings. No hard sell, no unnecessary extras—just honest, expert advice backed by real experience.
In this article, we’ll explore some of the smart add-ons and upgrades you can pair with your solar PV system to save even more, boost your energy independence, and future-proof your home.
Bird Protection
With a solar installation, you want to attract the sunlight, not the birds that come with it. Unfortunately, birds love to nest under solar panels and squirrels and other small creatures like to bite through wires. At SolarTherm UK we offer bird proofing as standard to all our customers – you can decline if you wish but we always recommend it at time of install. We use a black galvanised mesh that is strong and long lasting and in most cases virtually invisible at ground level.
💡 Top tip: It’s more cost-effective to install bird protection during your solar panel installation rather than retrofitting it later.

Install SolarEdge Power Optimisers
If you are interested in the data, savings and monitoring, it would be worth investing in a SolarEdge power optimised system, giving you monitoring of your system at an individual panel level. SolarEdge allows you to see performance, money saving and keep track of your peak efficiency. Whilst all solar inverters come with some form of monitoring platform, capabilities vary by the system and brand with traditional string inverters.
Solar Battery Storage
With solar panels and battery storage you can cover up to 90% of you usage, reducing the amount of electricity you draw from the grid and reducing your energy bills even further. Whilst storage batteries are an expensive investment, the benefits they bring can far outweigh the costs.

EV Charger
If you have an electric vehicle (EV) you can save up to an additional £600 a year by charging your EV on solar. Not only that, but having a home EV charger can boost your property’s value. If you are an EV owner, or are looking to buy an EV car in the near future, having a solar compatible EV charger installed is the perfect match for your solar system. Not only can you charge from the sun, you can also take advantage of off-peak EV specific tariffs such as Octopus Go and charge your vehicle from as little as 7.5p per kWh.

Immersion Divertor
If you have a hot water tank, a savvy way to save more is to have an immersion divertor installed alongside your solar PV system. The divertor will use excess electricity to heat your hot water tank instead of sending the power back to the grid.
Supercharge Your Solar, Maximise Your Savings
Your solar panels are the foundation—but these smart add-ons can help you unlock even greater savings, increase your energy independence, and future-proof your home for years to come.
At SolarTherm UK, we’ll guide you through every option available—no pressure, just honest advice tailored to your property, lifestyle, and energy goals.
