Solar Panel Quotes Explained
When considering getting a solar panel quote, most people find that it can be more complicated than they initially thought. That’s why at SolarTherm UK, we do all the hard work to make things as simple as possible.
There are a number of considerations to take into account when calculating a solar panel quote as a lot of factors can influence the efficiency of the system, such as roof orientation, pitch and shading. Then there are aspects such as energy consumption and usage patterns, which can influence the design, and ultimately the quote.
At SolarTherm UK, we make all of this as simple as possible, by asking you to answer a few quick questions on our online solar panel quote form to get things started.

What to Look For in a Solar Panel Quote
Choosing a solar panel quote can be a bit overwhelming, there are a number of things to consider when shopping for solar panels, such as warranties, installation costs, and accreditations – and that’s before you even start talking kilowatt hours and inverter sizes! At SolarTherm UK we understand that for most people solar panels are an investment, and like any investment you want to be sure you are making a good choice. With that in mind, let’s break down the important things to look for when getting a quote for solar panels.
Company Accreditations
Always make sure the company providing your solar installation quote has at least the following accreditations:
MCS – The Microgeneration Certification Scheme are a standards body, they set out the standards for solar panel installers to follow. An installer with MCS Certification is regularly inspected to ensure they adhere to industry standards.
HIES – A consumer protection organisation for renewable energy products. HIES ensure all of their registered installers are vetted, and provide consumer advice, deposit protection and insurance-backed guarantees.
EPVS – Solar panel installers registered with EPVS use accredited calculation methods to ensure the solar panel quotes and performance figures are accurate and not mis-selling. Free validations are available and the system will be certified.
NICEIC – The certification body for the electrical contracting industry. They ensure that all electricians and installers are certified to fit systems safely and to the correct standards.
FCA – If the solar panel quote includes financing, ensure the company is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority. They ensure that financial products (such as finance packages) are fair value, provide support and ensure correct communication.
Warranties
Solar is a long term investment, so you want the product to last. Always check the solar panels quote for the warranty periods of all the equipment installed. The panels themselves will usually have the longest warranty. Anywhere from 25+ years is a good rule of thumb. Other equipment such as inverters, and batteries will have slightly shorter warranties, and maintenance costs for these should be factored into any savings projections.
Your Property
Always check that any solar panel quote has correctly assessed your property. As we have already mentioned, numerous factors can affect how well a solar PV system performs, which in turn will affect the amount of savings quoted from the system and the return on investment period.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the installer would need to come to your property to make these assessments. In this modern age, solar panels quotes can often be very accurately calculated using satellite imagery and 3D modelling software to predict sun-paths, irradiance and shading.
Your Energy Consumption
Your solar panels quote will usually have a savings projection and an estimated return on investment. This should be calculated using your estimated annual usage (you probably gave this to the company from your energy bill). This figure should be used to determine the size of the system and the amount of savings you will achieve.
If you are planning to increase your usage in the future, for example with an EV – let the installer know when you are getting the solar panel quote so this can be accounted for.
Your Usage Pattern
If your property is empty for most of the day, the peak energy production from the solar PV system could go unused. In this case the energy will typically be exported back to the grid. If so, it may be beneficial to add battery storage to the system. This will allow the solar-generated electricity to be stored for when it is needed later, increasing savings and return on investment. This is something that should be assessed in your solar panel quote.
Installation Costs
Check that your solar panel quote includes installation costs, such as access to the areas the installers need, i.e.. Scaffolding.
Is Finance Available for Solar Panels?
Yes! SolarTherm UK are an FCA accredited broker (not a lender) and we have a range of finance packages available to spread the cost of your solar panel system. If you request a quote using our simple form and speak to a member of our team about finance options.
