Modern home with a solar PV installation

How Long Does Solar Panel Installation Take in the UK?

If you’re considering solar panels, you’re probably wondering:

“How long does solar panel installation take from survey to switch on?”

The short answer: most domestic solar installations in the South East take 2-6 weeks from initial survey to full system activation, with the physical installation itself usually completed in less than one day.

Below, we break down the full solar installation timeline so you know exactly what to expect.

Stage 1: Initial Enquiry and Remote Assessment

After contacting SolarTherm UK, the first step is assessing your property’s suitability for solar. This typically includes reviewing roof orientation and pitch, checking shading levels and analysing annual electricity usage. From this information, we can design the ideal system for your property and usage and provide an indicative quote.

One of our dedicated team can either visit your home and go through everything with you, or we can assess your property remotely using satellite modelling and digital design software. Most of this is completed within a day or two of you enquiring.

Stage 2: Technical Survey

Once you’re happy to proceed, a site survey is arranged. During the survey, our experienced surveyor will:

  • Inspect roof structure and condition
  • Check loft access and rafter spacing
  • Confirm inverter and battery location
  • Assess consumer unit compatibility
  • Plan cable routes and isolator positions
  • Ensure the proposed system is suitable

This ensures compliance with MCS standards and UK electrical regulations. In most cases, the survey takes under 90 minutes.

Stage 3: Design, DNO Application and Approvals

Before installation, we submit a grid notification to your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO). For standard residential systems under 3.68kW per phase, approval is usually straightforward. Larger systems or battery storage may require formal approval before installation.

This stage can take 5-15 working days, depending on the DNO. During this time, final system design, mounting layouts and electrical schematics are confirmed.

Stage 4: Solar Panel Installation

The physical installation is usually the quickest part of the process. For a typical 8-14 panel residential system, scaffold is erected a day or two before installation. On installation day, your install team will arrive – this usually consists of a roofer and two electricians – they will reassess and plan the days work, before installing mounting rails onto your roof. Once the mounting kit has been installed, panels are fitted and wiring is routed from the panels to the inverter. After installation is complete, your system is tested and commissioned. Larger systems may take slightly longer.

Most homeowners are surprised by how fast and minimally disruptive solar installation is.

Stage 5: Commissioning and Turn On

Once installed, your system is:

  • Electrically tested
  • Commissioned
  • Connected to your consumer unit
  • Activated and monitored

On receipt of payment, you’ll receive your handover pack, consisting of your MCS certificate, electrical installation certificate and DNO approval. Your MPAN number will be forwarded on once received from your DNO.

In most cases, your solar panels begin generating electricity on the day of installation.

What Can Affect Solar Installation Timescales?

While most projects move quickly, delays can occur due to:

  • DNO grid approval delays
  • Roof repairs required before installation
  • Planning permission (listed buildings or conservation areas)
  • Scaffold scheduling during peak seasons
  • Supply chain demand during high solar uptake periods

At SolarTherm UK, we manage the full process to minimise delays and keep your project on track.

Why Installation Speed Matters

A professionally managed solar installation ensures faster return on investment, reduced energy bills sooner, lower carbon emissions immediately and smooth grid compliance. Choosing an experienced, MCS certified installer helps avoid costly delays or rework. At SolarTherm UK, having worked alongside DNOs in the South East for over 15 years, our working relationship can speed up approval and keep your installation running smoother.

FAQs

How long does solar panel installation take on the day?

Most residential systems are completed within 1–2 days.

Do I need to be home during installation?

Access to the property is required, particularly for loft and consumer unit access.

When will I start saving money?

From the moment the system is switched on, you begin generating your own electricity and reducing grid consumption.

How long before I can export electricity to the grid?

Once your MCS certificate is issued, you can apply for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Approval time varies by energy supplier.
