SolarTherm UK recently completed a solar panel and battery storage installation for a homeowner in Stanford-le-Hope, Essex, providing a 5.85 kWp solar PV system alongside a 9.4 kWh Hanchu ESS battery.
The system was designed to help the property generate more of its own renewable electricity, reduce reliance on the grid and make better use of the solar energy produced throughout the day.
With estimated annual electricity consumption of around 4,408 kWh and predicted solar generation of approximately 5,128 kWh per year, the installation has been sized to provide a substantial contribution towards the property’s electricity requirements.
The Solar PV System
The new system consists of:
- 13x Aiko N-Type ABC Neostar 450W solar panels
- 9.4 kWh Hanchu ESS battery storage
- Bird protection mesh
The Aiko N-Type ABC Neostar panels were selected for their high efficiency performance and modern all black appearance, providing a discreet and attractive addition to the property while maximising the available roof space.

Adding Battery Storage for Greater Energy Independence

Alongside the solar panels, SolarTherm UK installed a 9.4 kWh Hanchu ESS battery. Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, but household electricity demand does not always coincide with solar production. Battery storage allows surplus electricity generated during the day to be stored and used later, helping the homeowner make greater use of their own renewable energy.
The battery can therefore help reduce the amount of electricity that needs to be purchased from the grid, particularly during the evening and other periods when the solar panels are not generating electricity.
Protecting the Solar Installation
As part of the installation, bird protection mesh was fitted around the solar panels. Birds can sometimes access the space underneath solar panels and build nests, potentially causing damage or creating maintenance issues. The protective mesh provides a physical barrier around the panels while allowing the system to continue operating normally.
Scaffolding was also provided as part of the installation, ensuring safe access to the roof throughout the works.
Predicted Energy Generation and Savings
Based on the property’s electricity usage and the expected performance of the soalr PV system, the installation is predicted to generate approximately 5,128 kWh of electtriity per year.
The property currently has an estimated annual electricity consumption of approximately 4,408 kWh, based on information from the homeowner’s electricity bill. The combination of solar generation and battery storage is expected to provide significant long term energy savings.
- Predicted year 1 savings: £1,116
- Estimated payback period: 8 years
- Predicted 30 year savings: £92,145
These figures are projections and actual savings will vary depending on electricity usage, energy prices, solar generation, battery usage and future tariff rates.
Reducing Carbon Emissions
The system will also help reduce the property’s reliance on electricity generated from fossil fuels. The installation is predicted to reduce carbon emissions by approximately:
- 1.02 tonnes of CO₂ per year
- 30.76 tonnes of CO₂ over 30 years
- Equivalent to approximately 48 trees planted per year
By generating renewable electricity at home and storing surplus solar energy for later use, the Stanford-le-Hope property can make a meaningful contribution towards reducing its carbon footprint.
