Project Overview
SolarTherm UK was proud to deliver a sensitive and technically robust solar PV upgrade for a historic church in Little Walsingham, Norfolk. This project involved replacing an ageing 20 year old system and a failed inverter, bringing the site up to modern efficiency standards while respecting the building’s active use and heritage.
Recommended to the Church by an existing SolarTherm UK customer, this project highlights the trust we’ve built across the region and our expertise in working on complex, live environments.
System Details
- Location: Little Walsingham, Norfolk
- Property Type: Church
- System Size: 16.40 kWp
- Panels Installed: 40 x Amerisolar 410W
- Mounting System: GSE in-roof (integrated system)
- Installation Date: January 2025

The Challenge
This project required careful planning and execution due to several unique factors:
- Ageing system replacement: the existing solar PV array was around 20 years old and no longer performing efficiently. Additionally, the inverter had failed in October 2024, leaving the system non-operational.
- Live environment: the Church remained fully operational throughout the installation, hosting regular services, prayer meetings and community events.
- Sensitive setting: as a place of worship, it was essential that works were carried out respectfully and with minimal disruption.
Our Solution
SolarTherm UK provided a complete system upgrade, replacing both the outdated panels and failed inverter with a modern, high efficiency solution.
- Integrated in-roof system: we installed a GSE in-roof mounting system, allowing the panels to sit flush with the roofline. This not only improves the aesthetics but is particularly suited to heritage and community buildings where visual impact matters.
- Phased and flexible installation: our team worked around the Church’s schedule, pausing works during services and key events to ensure zero disruption to daily activities.
- Full system modernisation: by upgrading both panels and inverter, the Church now benefits from significantly improved performance, reliability and long term energy generation.
Results and Savings
The new system is delivering strong financial and environmental benefits:
- First year savings: £2,703.09
- Projected 30 year savings: £119,902.65
- Payback period: 8 years
In addition to cost savings, the Church has significantly reduced its carbon footprint, supporting long term sustainability goals and setting an example within the local community.
