When it comes to switching to solar, SolarTherm UK are the experts, we’re always researching the latest technology, testing the newest equipment and training our team to be solar experts. That’s why when solar tiles first started appearing on the horizon, we got excited – a sleek, aesthetically pleasing alternative to solar panels was an exciting advance in solar technology.
This article deep dives into the reality of solar tiles, their advantages, disadvantages and when they should be used over traditional roof-mounted solar panels.
What are solar tiles?
Solar tiles are a new technology designed to be fully integrated on your roof, replacing traditional roof tiles. They offer a modern, sleek aesthetic blending seamlessly with the architecture of your home. Although they look different, they work in the same way traditional roof-mounted solar panels work. Many companies have tried and failed in making solar tiles, but Tesla have now seen some success in their development. Tesla have manufactured their solar tiles to be three times stronger than a traditional roof tile, meaning they are more weather resistant and built to last.
Unfortunately, as solar tiles are in their infancy, there are still many disadvantages. The cost of installing a solar tiled roof is far higher than that of a traditional roof-mounted solar array or even integrated solar panels and can take longer to install. A standard solar installation can be completed in under a day, but SolarTherm UK believe it will take 2-3 days minimum to install a solar tile roof, again increasing installation costs due to the labour intensity. Solar tiles are between 8 and 15% less efficient than traditional solar PV panels, meaning you will be paying more to generate less electricity. The biggest disadvantage of solar tiles is their availability – only 4 companies produce solar tiles – 2 of which are currently not available to purchase in the UK, the other two only offering limited styles and low efficiency production.
When solar tiles make sense
SolarTherm UK recommends avoiding solar tiles for the time being until the technology and efficiency catches up with traditional solar panels. Once prices come down and they become more affordable with higher efficiency levels, solar tiles would be perfect to install on listed buildings or in conservation areas. Solar tiles are also the perfect addition when renovating your roof, building a new home or when aesthetics matter.
At SolarTherm UK, we can see the potential for solar tiles in the future and are excited for the day the solar tile takes over from the traditional roof tile for roof renovations and new build.
