Tesla, best know for its electric vehicles and solar batteries, has applied to Ofgem for a licence to supply electricity to homes and businesses in the UK. If approved, Tesla could enter the UK energy market as soon as next year, competing with the major energy providers such as Octopus Energy, British Gas and E-On.
The tech giant already operates in solar energy and home battery storage and runs Tesla Electric in Texas, offering customers cheap EV charging and payments for feeding back to the grid.
With more than 250,000 Teslas on the road and tens of thousands of homes benefitting from the Tesla Powerwall in the UK, Tesla has a ready-made customer base for its new energy venture. The move comes as Tesla’s EV sales have declined across the UK and Europe, facing strong competition from other car manufacturers.
At SolarTherm UK, we welcome innovation in the UK energy sector, especially when it helps homeowners take control of their energy use. Whether it’s from established providers or new market entrants, options like battery storage, renewable generation and smarter tariffs can help reduce costs and reliance on the grid.
It’s currently unclear what tariffs Tesla will offer in the UK, but SolarTherm UK will continue to monitor developments and report back as more details emerge.
