Important Notice: Beware of Solar Warranty Scams

At SolarTherm UK, we’ve been made aware of several scam attempts targeting solar customers across the UK. These scams often involve fraudsters pretending to be trusted organisations, such as MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme), in the renewable energy sector, using scare tactics and false information to pressure people into buying unnecessary services.

We want to make sure our customers – and the wider public – are fully informed about how these scams work, what to look out for, and the steps we recommend you take to protect yourself.

What to Watch Out For

  • Text messages claiming your solar warranty has expired

Some solar panel owners have received text messages telling them their solar warranty has ended, urging them to call a number to renew it. These messages, while appearing legitimate as they usually come from a trusted name, are fraudulent.

  • Cold calls, emails or text messages pretending to be official bodies

We’ve also recently been alerted to companies impersonating well-known energy organisations. These scammers often try to sell (unnecessary) maintenance or warranty packages, by falsely claiming your existing warranty has expired or that your system is not working efficiently.

Remember: SolarTherm UK will never contact you unexpectedly to demand payment for warranties or maintenance. If you’re unsure, please contact us directly using the details on our website, or by completing a Customer Service Helpdesk ticket.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Always check the sender details carefully – scam messages often use false IDs.
  • Never give out personal or financial information over the phone or via text if you’re not 100% sure who you’re speaking to.
  • If you receive a suspicious message, forward it to 7726, a free reporting service advised by Ofcom.
  • If you’re suspicious, ask to call the company back, search their details and use the phone number off the trusted website.
