In June 2025, solar energy grew to become the largest single source of electricity in the European Union, according to data compiled by the global energy think tank Ember.
As much of Europe was sweltering in heatwaves in June, solar energy generation outshone other energy sources by contributing 22.1% of the EU electricity share. This is a record level for solar and enabled solar power to become the largest single source of electricity for the month.
Ironically, the sun was both helping the generation of energy and causing an increase in demand as additional energy was needed to meet the heatwave-driven energy demand to cool buildings.
Across Europe, over 13 countries have declared their highest monthly solar energy generation, which has been fuelled by an increase in solar capacity and optimal weather conditions.
The leading country for solar generation was the Netherlands, which reported 40.5% of its electricity from solar power, with Greece in second place, producing 35.1% from solar. In the UK, we also saw a significant increase in solar generation with 12% of electricity from solar in June, which is 2% increase on the previous June.
The records are continuing to be beaten across Europe and will continue to do so as momentum for renewable power builds and more solar capacity is planned.
But it’s not just solar breaking the records, wind is playing its part too. In June 2025, 15.7% of the EU’s electricity was produced from wind energy, which is a record for that month.
Not just for large solar farms
But the solar gains don’t have to be just from the solar farms; many households and businesses are joining in a solar rooftop revolution. Many rooftops have the potential to house solar panels and could support the UK in reducing carbon emissions and aid you in lowering your energy bills by up to 50%.
