Energy bills will rise by 1.2% in January, but what can you do about it? Read on...
As 2025 rolls in, forecasters from Cornwall Insight, a leading energy consultancy, have said they expect energy bills to rise from today, January 1st. Furthermore, they state that they are likely to rise again in April as anticipated.
We should all be aware that the Energy price cap (the limit the UK Government puts on suppliers as the maximum rate they can charge) rises today at the start of January. This is holding the average annual bill at £1738. However, this has already increased by £21 in the period from October to December alone. Bills have already been raised by 10% which is an average equal to £12 per month.
When SolarTherm UK set out on our journey to promote solar energy, it was a bit of a niche product, and was met with some scepticism. But since our early days in 2010, the average UK electricity has increased by £451 or 182%. So, our early customers have not only had the benefit of the early day’s subsidies such as the Feed In Tariff, but also our case studies over the years have shown homes and businesses making direct savings on their bought-in grid power of up to 83%, with the average solar panel systems checked saving around 56%.
On top of this they have fixed the price of their generated electricity and avoided the 182% price increase on 56% of their energy consumption.
So, after installing solar panels, the expected price increase in April to £1,785 per year would only apply to the 44% of grid power that our customers continue to import.
Cornwall Insight go on to say that bill payers have seen costs rise every three months since July. There are many reasons behind these increases, with the usual cost of gas-generated electricity remaining uncertain due to the war in Ukraine and associated political issues; and uncertainty still regarding Donald Trump and what he plans to do with other fossil fuels such as liquefied natural gas. But it’s also safe to say that with talk of the electricity standing charges being varied or removed utilities may seek to add these lost profits to the cost of a unit of electricity each time the price cap is allowed to be increased.
Therefore, it seems a realistic possibility with the falling cost of solar PV that it still offers a genuine alternative energy supply for your home or business.
As one of the longest standing UK solar contractors, SolarTherm UK offers low-cost finance options, a quick and easy desktop roof design process, followed by a detailed cable survey and installation.
