In short yes – but here’s why you probably shouldn’t.
Cost
Labour and scaffolding cost cover 15-40% of your installation costs. If you are moving your solar panels, you will need to pay these again – twice. To remove your solar panels you will need to hire an MCS-certified team like SolarTherm UK to take them off and to reinstall them. They will also need scaffold to access the roof to take them down, and then scaffold to fit them onto your new roof. You could be paying anywhere upwards of £5,000 just to take them off and reinstall, that’s without any costs relating to re-registering your panels, storing them securely and making any repairs to the roof tiles underneath them. If you have an integrated solar system, you would be paying even more as the labour costs would rise and you would also have the additional costs of replacing the roof where the panels were integrated.
Property value
Solar panels can increase the value of your property by up to 25% – many people when looking to buy a home are now looking for green and sustainable features to save them money in the long-term. EPC ratings and green technology is becoming more and more important to potential buyers in a time where energy costs are rising and evidence of climate change and extreme weather appearing in the news.
System design
At SolarTherm UK, we don’t believe in a one size fits all approach to solar, so what is practical and viable for one property may not be suitable for your new property.
These reasons, when put together mean it is usually the better financial decision to leave your panels on your old home and install a newer, modern system with a new warranty on your new home. With solar technology improving every day and becoming more affordable it is financially beneficial to start afresh and leave your old system with its new owners.
