A Bright Future for Renewable Power
Mainland Britain has officially smashed its clean energy generation record, a major milestone on the road to a sustainable future. New analysis from Carbon Brief has found that clean energy sources has met 100% of Britain’s electricity demand for a total of 87 hours so far in 2025. Jumping from 64.5 hours in 2024 and only 2.5 hours in 2021.
During these record breaking periods, wind energy provided 72%, nuclear 18% and solar 10% of the power. Showing how solar power has become a vital source of cleaner, green electricity in the UK. Clean energy generation exceeded 105% of national demand at times, allowing the UK to export surplus electricity to neighbouring countries.
Solar Power Shines Brighter Than Ever
The longest continuous stretch of 100% clean energy ran for an impressive 15 hours from midnight to 3pm on 26th May. Britain continues to generate small amounts of gas-based power, equivalent to 13% of demand, allowing us to export up to 19% of all electricity produced.
The success seen this year is proving that with continued investment in solar technology and renewable infrastructure, Britain is capable of running on clean energy for extended periods, reducing reliance on emission producing fossil fuels.
On Track for 2030 Clean Energy Goals
The UK government has set ambitious clean energy targets, aiming for 95% of electricity generation to come from renewable sources by 2030. 2025 has seen 66% of all electricity generated by renewable or nuclear sources, with solar energy playing a vital role in meeting these goals.
NESO (The National Energy System Operator) has committed to running Britain’s grid entirely fossil fuel free for a minimum of 30 minutes by the end of this year. This is a groundbreaking step for Britain and shows the potential to run a renewable energy system in the very near future.
