A Day in the Life of a Solar Installer

Solar installer on a roof

From the Rooftops of the South East and East Anglia

When people think about solar panel installation, they often picture us arriving, climbing onto a roof, fitting a few panels and heading home. The reality is a little more involved than that.

As a solar installer at SolarTherm UK, no two days are exactly the same. From early morning site checks to seeing a customer’s system generate its first clean kilowatt of electricity, every day brings new challenges and rewards.

Here’s what a typical day looks like for me.

6.30am – Preparing for the Day Ahead

The day starts early. Before we head out, the team gathers at our depot to review the installation schedule, check equipment and load the van with everything we’ll need. Every solar installation is unique, so preparation is essential. We make sure we have the correct mounting systems, solar panels, inverter, cabling, safety equipment and any specialist tools required for the property.

A successful installation starts long before we arrive at a customer’s home.

8.00am – Arriving at the Property

Most of our installations take place across Essex, Kent, Suffolk, Hertfordshire and the wider South East and East Anglia region.

Once we arrive, we introduce ourselves to the homeowner and carry out a final site assessment. Although the system has already been designed, we always double check roof conditions, access points, electrical connections and safety requirements.

Clear communication is important. We explain the day’s plans and answer any last minute questions before work begins. Many homeowners are excited to see their solar project finally becoming a reality.

9.00am – Roof Installation Begins

Safety is always our top priority. After setting up access equipment and carrying out our safety checks, we being installing the mounting system that will secure the solar panels to your roof.

This stage requires precision. Every bracket and rail must be positioned correctly to ensure the system remains secure and performs efficiently for decades.

Weather conditions in the UK can be unpredictable, so we install systems designed to withstand strong winds, heavy rain and everything else the British climate can throw at them.

11.00am – Installing the Solar Panels

This is often the most visible part of the installation.

The solar panels are carefully lifted onto the roof and secured to the mounting framework. Each panel is connected as part of the wider system design, ensuring optimal performance and energy generation.

One of the best moments is when homeowners step outside and see their roof transformed.

Many tell us they’ve been thinking about investing in solar energy for years, so it’s rewarding to see their excitement when the panels are finally in place.

1.00pm – Electrical Installation and System Setup

While part of the team continues work on the roof, others focus on the electrical side of the installation. This involves fitting the inverter, connecting cabling, configuring monitoring systems and integrating battery storage where applicable.

Modern solar systems are incredibly advanced. Many homeowners can track their solar generation and electricity usage directly from their smartphone. Proper installation and commissioning are critical to achieving maximum efficiency and ensuring compliance with UK electrical standards.

3.00pm – Testing and Commissioning

Before any system is handed over, we carry out comprehensive testing.

This includes checking:

  • Electrical connections
  • System voltage and performance
  • Inverter operation
  • Monitoring functionality
  • Safety compliance

We want every SolarTherm UK customer to have complete confidence that their system is operating exactly as designed. Quality control is one of the most important parts of our job.

4.00pm – The Best Part of the Day

My favourite moment is switching the system on for the first time. Watching a new solar PV system begin generating clean, renewable electricity is incredibly satisfying.

For many homeowners, this is the start of lower energy bills, reduced dependence on the grid and a significant reduction in their household carbon footprint.

It’s even more rewarding when a customer sees those first generation figures appear on their monitoring app.

4.30pm – Customer Handover

Before we leave, we take the time to walk homeowners through their new system. We explain:

  • How their solar panels work
  • Expected energy generation
  • Monitoring apps and software
  • Battery storage operation (if installed)
  • Maintenance recommendations

We believe customer education is just as important as installation quality. An informed homeowners gets the most value from their investment.

Do solar installers work in winter?

Yes. Solar panels can be installed throughout the year, provided weather conditions allow safe working practices.

Will I need to be home during installation?

We recommend that homeowners are available at the beginning and end of the installation, although constant supervision is not usually required.

Are solar panels difficult to maintain?

No. Solar panels require very little maintenance. Occasional inspections and cleaning are generally sufficient to keep them performing efficiently.

Is battery storage worth considering?

For many households, battery storage can increase solar self-consumption by storing excess electricity generated during the day for use during the evening.
