A new report from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has revealed that 76% of the UK public support local solar developments, showing continued confidence in renewable energy and the value of professional solar panel installation across the country.
According to the survey, 43% of respondents said they were happy or very happy to see a solar project built in their local area, while 32% said they wouldn’t mind either way and only 15% expressed opposition to local solar installs.
Renewables Still Enjoy Strong Public Support
Support for renewable energy overall, including solar, wind and biomass, remains high at 80%. DESNZ data shows a drop in strong support for renewables from 54% in Autumn 2021 to 46% in Summer 2025, even so, the majority of UK households continue to recognise the importance of sustainable energy sources and professional solar installation services in achieving Net Zero goals.
Where Solar Panel Installations Are Most Popular
Support for solar panel installs is strongest in Northern Ireland (49%) followed closely by the East and South East of England (48-47%). Interestingly, younger people remain far more positive about solar energy, with nearly half of those under 55 saying they support local solar installations, compared with just 36% of those over 55.
Public Awareness of Solar Energy Benefits
The survey also set out to investigate what drives public approval for renewable projects. Respondents acknowledged support for solar projects included lower energy bills for local residents (62%), community investment in projects and local facilities (59%) and job creation in the green energy sector (58%).
At SolarTherm UK we’ve seen first hand how quality solar panel installations can transform communities, cutting household bills, creating green jobs and helping homeowners reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.
The Growing Role of Large Scale Solar Projects
The UK’s solar industry continues to grow at pace. Earlier this month Energy Secretary Ed Milliband approved the 500MW Tillbridge solar project in Lincolnshire, now the country’s largest, marking the tenth major solar development approved under the current government and underlining the expanding role of solar power in the UK’s drive to reach Net Zero by 2050.
