Solar Panel Grants for Farms

Recently, the Environmental Secretary, Steve Barclay, has announced capital grants being made available to farmers who wish to install Solar Panels on rooftops and irrigation reservoirs (floating solar) as well as farms looking to invest in robotic and automatic equipment. These grants are aimed at improving productivity and increasing renewable energy usage on farmland across the UK.

The vast majority of this fund will be available under the Farming Productivity Grant (Round 2), which is part of the wider Farming Investment Fund announced in 2021 Farming Investment Fund announced in 2021. The grant provides between £15,000 – £100,000 towards solar equipment; helping energy resilience, maintaining fixed costs and a sustainable electricity supply for farms across the country.

Applications are taking place in 2 stages beginning in January 2024 until March 2024.

33 Solar panels mounted on a flat roofed residential property

Residential Solar Case Study: Flat Roof Design

Client

Our client wanted to save money on her energy bills. By adding solar panels onto her flat roof, they will save her great amounts on her electricity bill, especially with her owning an electric car that needs charging daily.

Project

33 JA Solar 385W half-cell mono black panels were installed to this detached home using our flat-roof mounting system. The 33 solar panels are hidden from view to fit with her aesthetically pleasing home, complete with a SolarEdge Inverter and Wonderlux Battery for energy storage.

Benefits of Solar Panels

Solar panels have many benefits and vast savings can be made for homeowners installing a Solar PV System. Solar panels can help households decrease their carbon footprint by reducing their reliance on fossil fuels, whilst saving hundreds on electric bills every year.

The 33-panel system we designed and fitted for this client will generate approximately 11938.08kWh per annum and has saved over 70,000kg of CO2 emissions to date, the equivalent of over 900 trees planted!

What our client had to say

  • How did you hear about SolarTherm?

I heard about SolarTherm via a Google search I wanted to find a local company for my solar installation.

  • Did you speak to many different solar panel installers before choosing SolarTherm?

We did have a national company who came round, I can’t remember who but they were very pushy and it was off-putting so I decided to keep looking.

  • What made you choose SolarTherm?

You were very informative and clear about what was needed and you were local.

  • Would you recommend SolarTherm to others and if so, why?

I would recommend SolarTherm due to good customer service and I felt as though you are a good honest company that wasn’t trying to over sell what was needed.

  • Do you think the investment in solar panels has been worthwhile?

It has definitely been worth investing in solar for our home. Our electricity use is very high and it has helped reduce the money that is spent.

  • How do the solar panels look on your property?

I have 100% flat roof so the solar panels are not noticed at all.

Commercial Solar PV Case Study: Bancroft School

Client

Bancroft’s School was founded by the Drapers’ Company in 1737 on the Mile End Road as a day-school for local boys from a diverse range of backgrounds; the school has come a long way geographically and institutionally since then, but the school remains committed to enabling pupils from a wide range of backgrounds to enjoy education and has a long tradition of excellence as an independent school.

Bancroft’s brief was to cover all available roof space with Solar Panels and a Solar Thermal plant made up of evacuated tubes. Phase one was to provide for 110,000kWh of electricity from the sports hall and swimming pool roof spaces.

SolarTherm UK tendered the project against several known and reputable installers winning the bid despite not submitting the cheapest quotation.

The Equipment Specification

The roof was made up of a three-layer mineral felt, with traditional stone chipping cover. The distance between the glass light wells as seen in the aerial photo needed a bespoke ballast mounted roof frame and design, undertaken and fabricated by BOVILL.TECH. Other areas were over-sheeted with mild steel trapezoidal sheet.

The mounting equipment was designed and installed in accordance with wind and weight loading calculations. The system installed with SolarEdge technology and Trina Vertex modules.

Project

One of our favourite projects of 2023 was installed by our team in under 2 weeks – from delivery of materials to commissioning of the work at Bancroft’s Prep School.  Works were undertaken during half term to a tight and demanding schedule. This installation consisted of 123kW, and well over 300 Solar PV modules were installed by the SolarTherm UK team to create this eco-friendly & low carbon system.

We have installed a live monitoring portal which is displayed in the school, and the systems have been explained to the pupils and included in academic and educational lessons.

Year 1 financial savings – £14,637.00

Saving the equivalent of 1,252 trees

Saving 20,708kg of carbon emissions

COMMERCIAL SOLAR GRANTS AND TAX INCENTIVES

Do you have a commercial or a residential property portfolio? If yes, it’s worth looking further into this:

Non-domestic minimum expected energy standards (MEES) requires any non-domestic private rented property to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) level of a B by 2030, but at least a rating of C by 2027, to meet the government’s ambition of achieving net zero by 2050. The installation of renewable energy is key to meeting this and solar panels can help meet this.

SolarTherm UK are already undertaking work on many property portfolios and we are advising our clients of this:

The installation of solar panels is eligible for special rate pool allowances that would be subject to the £1m annual investment allowance (AIA)

This allows 100% tax relief on eligible assets such solar for commercial roof space. So alongside purchases such as plant and machinery, integral features including solar panels are also now accepted. There is a 50% first year allowance for solar panels, meaning solar comes under the new ‘full expensing’ rules. This started in April 2023 and HMRC state will run until 31 March 2026. The 50% allowance is particularly useful where a company does not have sufficient AIA.

Example

The tax impact is shown as below where the full 50% first year allowance is available:

In the table example, 6% of the remaining amount (i.e., £35,000) can then be claimed each year until the asset is fully paid off. It is better to use the company’s Annual Investment Allowance against special rate pool items as a priority first, to other purchases.

Timing of the purchase is important as if the payment for the expenditure is 4 months or more after the unconditional obligation to pay arises, then expenditure is treated as occurring on the date of payment. Depending on the circumstances this may shift the tax relief available onto the next accounting period.

Grants

It’s also worth checking whether any grants are available to fund the purchase of solar equipment, for example Locase (https://locase.co.uk/) (Low Cost Carbon South East) runs until June 2023 (last grants panel is currently set for early May) which provides funding up to £10,000 on energy efficient equipment (certain eligibility criteria need to be met).

It is also worth checking https://www.grantfinder.co.uk/funding-highlights/funds/energy/ regularly for other grants.

The tax impact on use of grants is that the value on which monetary allowances are applied is reduced by the amount of the grant.
